In my case, I used EasyFind to look for "Microsoft Autoupdate" and "MAU", including hidden and system files, and found a long list of old versions and copies going back several years. There are commercial OS X uninstall apps that claim to be able to find and remove all the files associated with this updater, but most of them looked as dodgy as the thing they claim to remove. One article in OSXDaily reported 19 files associated with this app, and a large number of temporary files that OS X would probably get rid of over time. I suggest that anyone wanting to get rid of this do searches for these articles and get a complete list.
Other stuff that probably has to be deleted: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft AU Daemon and It looks like the app itself is here: /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft AutoUpdate.app Some articles reported that some virus detectors will find it and get rid of it, but I didn't follow up on these. There are several directories containing pieces of the puzzle, and it looks like most, if not all of these have to be tracked down and deleted.

It looks like this updater would have been installed when those apps were installed, and that it has been running in background for a long time. In my case, I downloaded OneNote some time ago, but deleted it when it became apparent it was useless and intrusive. I also have no MS apps, but have had in the past. I did a force quit with Activity Monitor, but it came up again today.
